Proven Ways to Make October Feel Special in The World

October has a funny way of making us want to do ALL the things.

Visit the pumpkin patch. Bake something with apples. Decorate pumpkins. Make a craft. Go on a hayride. Have a movie night. Jump in the leaves. Make cute snacks. Visit a fall festival.

Before you know it, your list of “simple fall fun” starts looking suspiciously like another to-do list.

But here’s the good news: You don’t need a packed calendar to make October feel special for your family.

Your kids don’t need a perfectly planned month to make wonderful fall memories. Some of the moments they’ll remember most can happen right in the middle of an ordinary day.

So instead of trying to squeeze more into your calendar this month, here are 7 simple ways to make October feel special by turning the things you’re already doing into opportunities for a little more fun, laughter, and time together.

1. Give Something Ordinary an October Twist

You don’t necessarily need to plan another activity. Sometimes you can simply change something you’re already doing.

  • Having sandwiches for lunch? Cut them into pumpkin shapes with a cookie cutter.
  • Serving hot chocolate? Add whipped cream and orange sprinkles.
  • Going for your usual walk? Turn it into a hunt for the funniest-shaped leaf.
  • Having pancakes Saturday morning? Add a little pumpkin or cinnamon and call it your Fall Pancake Breakfast.

The activity isn’t really new. You’ve just given an ordinary family moment a little seasonal sparkle.

And sometimes that’s all it takes.

2. Start One Tiny October Tradition

Family traditions don’t have to be elaborate.

In fact, some of the best traditions are the ones that are so easy you can actually repeat them year after year.

Choose just one little thing your family can associate with October.

Maybe it’s:

  • Friday-night hot chocolate
  • A flashlight walk after dinner
  • Pumpkin pancakes one Saturday morning
  • Reading fall books together before bed
  • An annual silly pumpkin decorating contest
  • Taking the same family photo in the leaves every year
  • Playing a favorite family game on Sunday afternoon

It doesn’t have to be Pinterest-worthy.

It just needs to be yours.

Years from now, “Remember when we always…” may matter much more than how elaborate the activity was.

3. Create a 10-Minute Family-Fun Habit

Ten minutes doesn’t sound like much.

That’s exactly why it works.

After dinner, before baths, or before everyone disappears into their evening routines, take ten minutes to do something together.

You could:

Play a quick game. ( ONE MINUTE FAMILY FUN CHALLENGE )

  • Ask a silly “Would You Rather?” question.
  • Have a one-song family dance party.
  • Tell funny stories.
  • Draw silly pumpkins.
  • See who can build the tallest block tower.
  • Head outside with flashlights.
  • Let everyone share the best part of their day.

You don’t need supplies, decorations, or an elaborate plan.

The goal isn’t to create a big event.

The goal is simply to create a little pocket of time when everyone is enjoying being together.

4. Let the Kids Choose

Here’s one of my favorite shortcuts for family fun:

Sometimes the easiest way to make October feel special is to let the kids help decide what “special” looks like.

  • Give the kids two or three choices and let them decide.
  • “Should we play a game or take a flashlight walk?”
  • “Would you rather decorate cookies or make popcorn for a movie?”
  • “Should we make silly pumpkins or spooky ones?”
  • Better yet, put a few simple activities on slips of paper and let someone draw one from a jar.
  • Giving children a say makes even a very simple activity feel special—and it takes some of the planning pressure off you.

That’s a win in my book.

5. Keep a Few Grab-and-Go Activities Ready

You know those moments when the kids announce:

“I’m bored!”

That’s usually not the moment you want to start searching Pinterest, gathering twelve craft supplies, and reading a three-page tutorial.

Instead, create a small family-fun basket or folder.

Keep a few easy things inside, such as:

  • Printed games
  • Coloring pages
  • Conversation cards
  • Dice
  • A deck of cards
  • Simple craft supplies
  • Scavenger hunts
  • Would You Rather? questions

When you suddenly have twenty free minutes—or the weather ruins your plans—you already have something ready.

No scrambling required.

6. Repeat the Things Your Family Loves

Here’s something I think we sometimes forget:

Kids don’t need a brand-new activity every time.

  • If everyone loved last Friday’s flashlight walk, do it again.
  • When they ask to play the same game three weekends in a row, let them
  • If your pumpkin muffins disappear before they’re cool, make another batch.

We adults sometimes feel pressure to constantly create something new and exciting.

Children often love the exact opposite.

Repetition turns favorite family activities into favorite family traditions.

So when you discover something that works, don’t cross it off your list.

Circle it.

7. Choose One Special Thing for the Weekend

Instead of creating a giant fall bucket list and feeling behind by October 12, try this:

Choose one special family activity each weekend.

That’s it.

Maybe this weekend you visit a pumpkin patch.

Next weekend you bake together.

The following weekend you have a family game night.

Another weekend might simply be popcorn, pajamas, and a movie.

Four weekends can give you four wonderful family memories—and still leave plenty of breathing room for soccer games, laundry, errands, birthday parties, unexpected sniffles, and real life.

I put together plenty of fun and goofy October occasions, along with a free October calendar, so you don’t have to come up with all the ideas yourself.

Pick one that makes your kids smile and forget the rest.

That’s exactly what the calendar is there for.

You Don’t Have to Do More to Make October Feel Special

When we think about making childhood special, it’s easy to picture big trips, elaborate parties, beautifully planned activities, and packed seasonal bucket lists.

But meaningful family memories are often much smaller.

  • They’re laughing over a ridiculous game at the kitchen table.
  • They’re drinking hot chocolate when it wasn’t quite cold enough for hot chocolate.
  • They’re walking around the block with flashlights.
  • They’re making lopsided pumpkins.
  • They’re hearing your child say, “Can we do that?
  • When they ask to play the same game three weekends in a row, let them again.
  • You don’t have to fill the calendar to fill childhood with good memories.

Choose something simple.

Put the phones down for a few minutes.

Laugh together.

And when something works?

Do it again.

P.S. Something New Is Coming…

I’ve been working behind the scenes on something especially for families who want more easy, ready-to-use ways to have fun together—without adding more work to an already busy week.

I’ll be sharing more later this week.

And yes…there may be pumpkins involved. 🎃
