How To Make Easy Pumpkin Activities For Kids

One simple theme. Seven fun activities. And a whole lot of family memories waiting to happen!
Have you ever noticed how something as simple as a pumpkin can spark a child’s imagination?
One minute, it’s sitting on the kitchen table. The next, it’s a silly character with a name, the star of a family game, or the inspiration for an afternoon of creative fun.
And the best part? You don’t need a trunk full of craft supplies, an elaborate party plan, or an entire afternoon to make it happen.
Sometimes, all you need is one simple theme and a little imagination.
Today, we’re taking pumpkins beyond the pumpkin patch and turning them into seven easy, inexpensive activities your family can enjoy throughout October.
Ready? Let’s have some pumpkin fun!

1. Roll a Silly Pumpkin
What happens when a pumpkin gets three eyes, a crooked smile, and a nose that looks suspiciously like a banana?
A whole lot of giggles!
What you’ll need:
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- One die
How to play:
Have everyone draw a large pumpkin outline. Then roll the die to decide what to add.
- Roll a 1: Add a pair of silly eyes.
- Roll a 2: Draw a funny nose.
- Roll a 3: Give your pumpkin a goofy mouth.
- Roll a 4: Add an unusual hat.
- Roll a 5: Draw some wild hair or curly vines.
- Roll a 6: Add a surprise accessory!
Keep rolling until everyone has created a one-of-a-kind pumpkin character.
For an extra challenge, have each family member name their pumpkin and invent a silly story about it.
Family Fun Bonus: Display everyone’s creations on the refrigerator for your very own Silly Pumpkin Gallery.
2. Go on a Pumpkin Hunt
Who says you need to wait until Easter to enjoy a good old-fashioned hunt?
Turn your living room, backyard, or even the kitchen into a miniature pumpkin patch!
What you’ll need:
- Small paper pumpkins
- Tape
- A basket or bag for collecting
Cut pumpkin shapes from orange paper and hide them around the house.
For younger children, leave the pumpkins in easy-to-spot places. For older children, make the hiding spots trickier or add simple clues.
You can even write a silly action on the back of each pumpkin.
Try these:
- Hop like a bunny five times.
- Make your funniest pumpkin face.
- Give someone a high five.
- Dance like a pumpkin in the wind.
- Tell everyone your favorite thing about fall.
Family Fun Bonus: Let the kids hide the pumpkins for the grown-ups. You might be surprised at how creative their hiding places become!
3. Create a Pumpkin Personality Patch
Not every pumpkin needs to be carved. In fact, some of the funniest pumpkin faces can be made with paper, glue, and a little imagination.
What you’ll need:
- Paper plates or orange construction paper
- Scraps of colored paper
- Crayons or markers
- Glue sticks
- Optional: yarn, stickers, or other craft scraps
Let everyone create a pumpkin with its own personality.
Maybe one pumpkin is a superhero. Another is a princess. Perhaps there’s a pirate pumpkin or one who wears enormous glasses!
Once the pumpkins are finished, ask a few questions:
- What’s your pumpkin’s name?
- What does your pumpkin like to eat?
- What makes your pumpkin laugh?
- If your pumpkin could go anywhere, where would it go?
These little conversations can turn a simple craft into a wonderful storytelling activity.
Family Fun Bonus: Tape the pumpkins to a wall or window and create a family Pumpkin Personality Patch.

4. Play Pumpkin Would You Rather?
Sometimes the simplest games lead to the funniest conversations.
Gather everyone around the table, pile onto the couch, or play while enjoying an afternoon snack.
Then ask a few pumpkin-inspired questions!
Would you rather…
- Live inside a giant pumpkin or ride in a pumpkin-shaped car?
- Have pumpkin pie for breakfast or pumpkin muffins for dinner?
- Wear a pumpkin hat all day or orange shoes for a week?
- Find a pumpkin as big as your house or one as tiny as a marble?
- Have a talking pumpkin as a pet or a pumpkin that could dance?
Here’s where the fun really begins: Ask everyone to explain their answers.
Kids have a wonderful way of coming up with reasons that grown-ups would never imagine!
Family Fun Bonus: Let each person invent one question for everyone else to answer.
5. Set Up a Pumpkin Toss Challenge
Here’s an easy way to get everyone moving, especially when the kids have a little extra energy to burn.
What you’ll need:
- A basket, bucket, or large bowl
- Orange paper balls, soft beanbags, or rolled-up socks
- A little space to play
Place the basket on the floor and mark a starting line.
Take turns tossing your pretend pumpkins into the basket.
Start close, then move the line farther away as the game progresses.
Want to make things more interesting?
Try tossing with your non-dominant hand, standing on one foot, or tossing backward over your shoulder while facing away from the basket. Make sure the area is clear and everyone uses soft objects.
Family Fun Bonus: Instead of competing, work together to see how many pumpkins your family can get into the basket in one minute.
Sometimes working toward a shared goal is even more fun than keeping score!

6. Make a Pumpkin Patch Snack
After all that playing, it’s time for a little something to eat!
One of my favorite ways to extend a family activity is to bring the theme right into the kitchen.
You don’t need a complicated recipe, either.
Try making Pumpkin Patch Toast!
What you’ll need:
- Bread or toast
- Cream cheese
- A little orange food coloring, if desired
- Raisins, chocolate chips, or small fruit pieces
- Thin apple slices for stems
Spread the cream cheese over the toast. If you’d like, tint it orange first.
Use the toppings to create silly pumpkin faces and add a little apple stem.
Every pumpkin can look different!
You can also keep things extra simple with pumpkin-shaped sandwiches, orange slices arranged like pumpkins, or a bowl of popcorn served in pumpkin-themed cups.
Family Fun Bonus: Let everyone name their snack creation before eating it.
Kitchen reminder: Choose age-appropriate toppings, supervise younger children, and adapt ingredients for food allergies.

7. Host a Silly Pumpkin Family Night
Now that you’ve tried a few pumpkin activities, why not combine your favorites into one special family evening?
And don’t worry. This doesn’t need to become another big project on your to-do list.
Keep it simple!
Here’s an easy plan:
Start with a game: Play Pumpkin Would You Rather? while everyone gathers.
Get moving: Have a quick round of Pumpkin Toss.
Get creative: Make a silly pumpkin character or draw a family of pumpkins.
Enjoy a snack: Serve something simple with a pumpkin or autumn twist.
Finish with a memory: Take a family picture showing off everyone’s silliest pumpkin faces.
That’s it!
You don’t need decorations, matching plates, or an elaborate schedule.
The goal isn’t to create a picture-perfect event.
The goal is to enjoy being together.
And if your family has so much fun with one activity that you never get to the others? I’d call that a successful family night!

One Theme Really Can Lead to Endless Fun!
Here’s something I’ve learned from years of planning children’s activities, parties, and family celebrations:
You don’t always need a brand-new idea.
Sometimes you just need to look at one idea in a few different ways.
Take our pumpkin theme.
We turned it into games, crafts, movement activities, conversation starters, snacks, and even a family fun night.
And we could keep going!
That simple idea is the heart of my One Theme, Endless Fun method.

A Little Fun Goes a Long Way
When our children look back on family life, I doubt they’ll remember whether every activity was perfectly planned.
But they may remember the afternoon everyone made ridiculous pumpkin faces.
Or the time Dad missed the basket six times during Pumpkin Toss.
Or the pumpkin character with three eyes and a name nobody could pronounce!
Those are the little moments that become family stories.
And sometimes, all it takes to get them started is one pumpkin, a little imagination, and a willingness to be silly together.
Here’s to turning ordinary days into wonderful family memories!
